A CV (Curriculum Vitae) is what most employers ask for when you are applying for a job of any sort. Your CV should basically"sell" you, in the sense that you are showing the employer that you are well suited for the job and are better than what they require.
A CV should be well presented, interesting, informative but most important of all WELL PRESENTED!! Employers have to go through many CV's for certain jobs, and will discard any CV's that on first impression are poorly presented. Hence the main objective is to provide all the relevant information as best as possible. CV Breakdown:
1)Style There are 2 main writing styles for a CV:
- Chronological: everything under separate headings
- Skill based: in order of skills relevant to the job
2)Length Your CV should not be more than 2 pages at most
(excluding covering letter). If you find yourself going over try to condense
your CV to contain only information that apply to the job and/or will impress
the employer.
3)Presentation Make sure your CV is well spaced and that
no paragraphs are too dense, use line spacing to help. Do NOT use many different
styles of font; keep one for headings and one for text. Also make sure the font
is smart e.g. Arial and Tahoma NOT Curlz. Use tables for qualifications if
necessary but don't make the page too dense.
4)Personal Details This includes your name, address,
telephone number, etc.
5)Profile This is optional but a profile is similar to an
abstract on a report. Just introduce yourself in a paragraph, your main skills,
and what you hope to achieve in the future.
6)Education Include all your education up to the present
day, what level the qualification is, and what grade/mark you obtained.
7)Work Experience Include everything you have done up to
date. Make sure you specify the job title, and some bullet points of key skills
achieved. If you have had many jobs, include the most recent one and all others
that are relevant to the job you are applying for, in terms of skills
achieved.
8)Skills In this section include any specific skills you
have, such as languages, drivers license, medical skills, computer training
etc.
9)Interests Write a short paragraph of your interests,
and also any achievements, e.g. Teams, number of wins etc.
10)References Always include 2 references, one from the
place you study, and one from your boss if possible. If not an old family friend
who knows you well will also do.
