Physics - as a degree   PDF  Print  E-mail
Written by Jiahong, Tan

Physics, a subject that many might find really boring, difficult and most important of all, perhaps believed what Einstein had once said: "god does not play dice". However, some find it to be something that fires the mind, giving unlimited potential to develop technology, to understand nature, and most importantly, the quest for finding our origins: the big bang?

Considered as the mother of all science, the understanding of physics is fundamental to almost every technological development in the world. It's contribution to mankind – endless; it's effect on Nature – total devastation or a god's gift; the People – passionate and some may say…total crazy.

Perhaps you find beauty in starring at the ripples of water on the coastline, or the light's reflection on a bubble, or even Roberto Carlos's famous swerving free kick against France in '96…perhaps you wonder even more; perhaps studying physics is for you.

Most undergraduate physics degrees are based on a number of core subjects in the first 2-3 years and a large selection of options in the later years. Core subjects are mechanics, relativity, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, mathematics, etc.

After 3-5 years of an undergrad physics degree, what's next? The majority of physics graduates continue on and do a PhD or other postgraduate degrees, not just in physics, but in all kinds of sciences, engineering fields and even in finance. In fact, in recent years, physicists are on demand in Wall Street because the employers value them for their analytical skills!

Career wise, physics graduate end up in a diverse array of fields, mostly in scientific research. However, there is also a significant portion of physics graduate in finance, management consultancy, teaching and government agencies.

Physics is not limited in science and technology. Do you know that the stock market can be modeled almost similar to the statistical physics found in gas molecules? Certain modern social and disease-spread theory too, is modeled according to physics theory.

A degree in physics is a degree in problem solving, and with the best life approach, may be the best years of your life.
