Students are not the only ones paying more attention to internships. Employers are also realising the benefits of a formal internship program to their overall recruiting efforts. A strong internship program not only builds an employer’s overall recruitment brand, it also allows an employer to identify high-quality candidates earlier in the academic cycle and foster relationships that may ultimately result in the hiring of a full-time employee.
Internship programs have proved as a means of:
1. Developing a solid pipeline of high-quality full-time talent, 2. A great way to lighten your employees' workload, 3. Hiring more desirable candidates, 4. Improving the reputation of the company through the word-of-mouth of candidates who have the best experiences on the job, where they are more likely to recommend their internship program to their peers.
However, when setting up an internship program, the intern should take as much away from the internship as your company does. A good internship program will include some "grunt" work, but it will also provide invaluable opportunities for a young person to learn about the working world and a particular industry. Involve interns in real projects -- if only on a low level -- and include them in meetings to listen and learn.
