While browsing through the booths at the University of Wollongong Career Fair last April wearing a name tag showing my name and field of study, I found that many company representatives, especially non-IT related companies and surprisingly a few IT companies do not know what computer engineering is all about.
So, what is computer engineering, exactly..?
Several definitions obtained from several government bodies, organizations and respectable Universities suggest that Computer Engineering or also known as Computer Systems Engineering as..
..the creative application of engineering principles and methods to the design and development of hardware and software systems.
..the field of study encompassing the design and implementation of computer hardware and software.
..the professional engineering discipline which covers the activities required to create a computing system to achieve an end-purpose in its own right and includes the design, construction and effective integration of hardware and/or software components.
..a focus on both the hardware and software of computer systems where it promotes an understanding of software design practice and of the technologies that enable designs to be physically realized.
Generally, computer engineering provides a broad understanding of engineering in the modern world with ample theoretical and practical knowledge that can be easily expanded upon in future careers. Being a computer engineer, you will be familiarized with the diverse range of topics in electrical, computer and telecommunication fields, gaining an in-depth understanding of these topics.
The primary emphasis of the major is on computer hardware design aspects together with a thorough grounding in software techniques; engineering design and synthesis skills; telecommunications; control and system theory; electronics; machine dynamics and mathematical systems. Upon completion, you are expected to have a high level of communication skills; the ability to analyze problems leading to formulation and evaluation of possible solutions; the ability to synthesis engineering solutions; leadership, teamwork and management skills; and general business acumen.
Since a computer engineer deals with the diverse range of emerging technologies, there are a great variety of career opportunities in different fields ranging from microprocessor design and robotics to biomedical engineering and satellite systems.
